Why I became a Lion – Doug Carlile

I was new to Johnsburg having just moved here in late March ’93 and a neighbor invited me to attend a Lions meeting….he said that there was no obligation…a free meal and I could meet some new people.  Sounded like a good deal….  I was introduced to each of the members prior to the meeting..and then again during the meeting.  There was a true feeling of camaraderie in the room.  I sat there during the reading of their last meeting minutes and Treasurers’ report and some current business follow-ups that were decimated to the group.  They then went to New Business…a member brought up the subject that one of their members had lost his job and was there something the club could do as a fundraiser for his family.  A suggestion was made that the 50/50 raffle drawing for that evening would go to the family….done.  Then someone suggested that they pass the hat….done.  By the time all was said and done, a total of $600.00 was raised…and as to not let him lose face, it was said that he had won the drawing for the evening.  It was at that time I decided that this was the type of group I wanted to be a part of....that was 15 years ago….and I could not have made a better decision.

This is just one small reason that I am proud to be a member of the Johnsburg Lions….
